Mastara Church

All Images

Century of Foundation: V Region: Aragatsotn Location: Mastara village The Mastara, a well preserved church from the early times, is located on the edge of the village with the same name. Nearby a smaller church dates back to the 7th century. An outside bears fragments of a Greek inscription that mentions the Sasanid King Peroz who reigned from 459-484. This would suggest a 5th century date, but other inscriptions date the church to the 7th century. According to popular etymology Mastara derives its name from St. Gregory the Illuminator, who brought back from Caesaria the relics of John the Baptist.
